35th Milo Marathon Manila Elims 2011 - Parking Advisory


RunRio announced that the number of participants swelled up to 34,000+ runners for the race tomorrow. Unimaginable, if you ask me. How will all 34,000+ participants fit in Mall of Asia? We will soon find out.  I missed the Milo Run last year and just heard stories from friends and families that it will take you minutes, Yes! MINUTES!, before you can cross the starting arc. And you'd have to zigzag your way if you need to speed up and make up for lost time

Another problem posed with a huge event such as this is parking. Many, perhaps, realized already that it also eats up precious time by locating and lining up for a good parking spot. Mall of Asia, in paper, can hold a maximum of 8,000 cars. But we also need to account, not only the runners, the major stakeholders and organizers that will be present on race day. Also the vehicles of their vendors/suppliers will use up valuable parking spaces.  In addition, not all 8000 parking slots will be made available/accessible

With that, following an age-old advice would be wise.  Be early on the venue.  Or should I say be EXTRA early tomorrow so as not to miss your assigned gun start.  You'd rather miss a few minutes of sleep rather than missing your race altogether.  Better yet, leave your vehicles at home and just grab a cab.  Or if you can, just run from your home to the venue, that's even better.  You cover more mileage and Mother Earth will love you for doing so

If you are running 21k or 10k, be there on or before 4AM.  I was caught up with the partial road closure last Sunday and you don't want to experience that.  You can check out the race maps to see which roads will be affected.  Sleep early.  Wake up early.

In the continuing celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Jose Rizal and History Week Celebration, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Animo Events Management Inc., will spearhead a fun run entitled “RUN RIZAL” on September 18, 2011.

Journey To Forty Two


A few weeks back, I've finally decided to take on a new challenge. Have a taste of a full marathon. Yes folks, forty two kilometers. The whole shebang! Not just to cover the distance but to finish it with a very decent time. I consulted Running For Fitness and Running Times to predict my marathon race time using my performance on my last half-marathon race (Yamaha Run).  The results wasn't favorable.  Quite far from my so called "decent time"

For me to realize my dream, I gotta train extra hard in order to improve my lactate threshold.  This, in effect, will enable me to properly tap my aerobic endurance potential which will ultimately result to an improved mile splits.  Can't wait for that to happen

But my dilemma is, which program to religiously follow.  For there are so many of them.  Should I follow Furman's FIRST?  How about Yasso?  The inverted approach looks tough.  Or should I just cut my hair?  One thing's for sure, its gonna be filled with tons of excruciating speedwork, unbearable tempo, and very long weekend runs under the scorching sun

Am I really ready for this?  Just thinking of the hard work ahead already gives me the shivers.  I just have to constantly remind myself that I need to train hard so race day comes easy.  Hope I'll be able to pull this off properly.  I do not want a repeat performance of my attempt last year when I prematurely jumped to 21k.  That was a bad sight and a good example of a bad example

I realize that I have a tough journey ahead but with the support and love of my family, friends and colleagues, I know I will be able to endure

Background
We understand that most participants go into a road race with a particular finish time in mind. Achieving the desired PR is mostly about pacing, especially in longer races like half and full marathons. With that, FFS suggested that we create 2 pace groups in the Rexona Run 2011 in order to help other runners achieve their finish time

Purpose
Our group will help other runners finish the race in: (a) 2 hours, and (b) 2 hours and 30 minutes. We will set the pace so runners don't start out too fast or slow down in the middle. We intend to keep you on track to hit the desired finish time. We will also provide advice and encouragement, if necessary. Alpha1 Team will don a sign (on our backs) that shows the goal time

Goal
To run the average pace to hit the goal time. It is not to beat that time. We do not intend to "bank" time early on in hopes that you’ll not lose that much when you tire especially in the last remaining kilometers. We must always be reminded that if we go out too fast we will gain seconds but lose minutes in the end. We will employ a 2% margin of error. We will consider ourselves a failure if we go beyond the goal time or if we are too early even by a minute. Intention is for you to finish strong and wear the biggest smile while crossing the finish line

Pace Group Etiquette
When running as part of a pace group, there are certain etiquette standards. Like all group situations, the dynamic of the running group will vary from one race to the next

Some groups may talk throughout the race, while others stay quiet. We will avoid too much chatting or offering advice if others are staying silent. We understand that some people get distracted when talked to while others enjoy it. We are also aware that some runners only want chatter early on and want silent focus later in the race (or vice versa)

In addition, please do not run in-front of the pace group leader and co-leader.  If you want to lead the group, we recommend that you leave the pack.  We are not here to race with one another but to give a hand especially to those aiming to beat their personal best.  Also, we will appreciate if you will give the pace group leaders elbow space

Domestique
We will not carry extra fluids and nutrition for you. We can, if needed, fight through the water stops to get fluids (and bananas) for you in order to keep the overall pace of the group steady. And please throw your water cups and banana peels to trash bins. Lets help keep the race route clean

Running Together
We can/will allow running side by side as long as it will not hamper other faster runners along the route. The pace group will be running in pairs (most of the time) so we do suggest for you to tuck behind. We will offer feedback about our current pace from time to time but will avoid providing it every kilometer marker

I was able to attend the public launch of RunRio's Timing Card at BGC. There's tons of great things we can look forward to (see below) from this small card. What I like the most is that all card bearers will be listed in Rio's Philippine Ranking. This will show how you fare against the other runners. For me, this will serve as a motivation to train even harder to improve my time and in effect, my ranking

How to get the RunRio Timing Card

How to use the RunRio Timing Card
- Onsite Registration. Just present your card to RunRio personnel and say your preferred race category and singlet size. Personnel will update it then you are registered
- Online Registration. No need to fill up all the fields required, just write your RunRio Card number on the "card number" field and all your information will be reflected. Then click on which race category and singlet size you desire. Click Submit and wait for your race kits at the delivery address submitted
- On Race Day. Bring your card and place it on your running shoes

Liability
- The runner shall be liable to RunRio Inc for the amount of PHP300 once RunRio Timing Card is lost or runner applied for the 2nd card

Car Expiry and Issuance
- Unless earlier terminated or cancelled, the card can be used repeatedly in a span of 1 year after issuance unless card is lost, broken or stolen
- Reissuance of the card will be at the sole discretion of RunRio Inc
- For any claim arising out of the performance, non-performance, defect in the card or function, RunRio Inc, will replace the card on condition that the runner did not use the card in one of the races and will return the defect, non-performance card to RunRio personnel

Puma Faas 200 BOLT Running Shoes

A couple of weeks ago, I told you that we are expecting three more FAAS models to come out and PUMA did not disappoint. They just brought out PUMA FAAS 200 BOLT

It retails for $80, a $5 less than the PUMA Faas 250. So if PUMA Philippines decides to bring it on our shores, we can expect it will demand at least PHP4,000+ out of our pockets

I look forward that this version will have better ground control but there's something that bothers me.  We can see that the heel height has been reduced in Faas 200 however the upper construction went backwards.  Faas 250 has a lighter and more breathable air mesh, in my opinion.  They should've kept that in FAAS 200
Is PUMA FAAS 100 next? Only time will tell. For now, all I can do is daydream and wipe the drool off my face as I wait for the day it arrives

Race Review: Pocari Sweat Fun Run 2011


For today's race review, I've asked Roland Pangilinan to provide his thoughts on the recently concluded Pocari Sweat Run 2011 held at Ortigas

Event: 2011 Pocari Sweat Run
Organizer: Pep Squad

Portalets. There were 10 portable toilets near the start/finish line. Five of which were assigned to boys and what remains for the girls
Baggage Service.  The baggage area is situated near the start/finish line as well
Race Route (10k).  Very challenging as most parts were uphill
Hydration Station.  We can't expect anything less from Pocari Sweat on this area.  "Overflowing" was the remark
Finish Line Chute.  There were separate lanes made to accommodate manual encoding of the finish time
Loot Bag.  Finisher's certificate, finisher's shirt, towel, and two bottles of cold Pocari Sweat were promptly provided.  Distribution of freebies were commendable

Earth Run 2011 - Run for Greener City

In its third year, Solar Entertainment Network’s fun run dubbed Earth Run goes nationwide with three legs to be held in Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu

After last years successful event, where over 8,000 runners took to the street to show their support for the environment, this year Earth Run looks to be even bigger and better. Water / Aid Stations
1 Water for drinking and/or dousing will be provided at the start/finish area and along the route. After using, please dispose of cups at the designated receptacles
2 Water stations will be made available every 2.5 kms along the route
3 Medical assistance will be roving in the 3K/5K/10K/21K route and at the finish area. CONSULT OUR MEDICAL TEAM ON ANY PROBLEM REQUIRING IMMEDIATE ATTENTION

Guidelines
1 Have your race number marked and recorded by an official checker. This will be proof that you started at the designated starting point
2 Once your race number is marked, DO NOT LEAVE the cordoned area
3 Runners should familiarize themselves with the race route provided inside the race packet OR enlarged route map on site
4 Race route may change on race day as the organizers deem necessary. However, the organizer shall ensure that the needed measures shall be taken to inform the runners of the changes
5 Your race number is non-transferable
6 Pin it in front of your running shirt. YOUR RACE NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES
7 A loop cord will be given to every runner at the halfway point. WITHOUT THIS, A RUNNER WILL BE DISQUALIFIED AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AS HAVING FINISHED THE RACE
8 Checkpoints along the route and at turning points will be set up to ensure that every runner travels the correct distance.  OFFICIALS WILL RECORD YOUR RACE NUMBER AT THESE POINTS
9 Runners should enter the appropriate chute for their specified distance. A violation may be grounds for disqualification
10 Organizer’s decision is final
11 Protests with regard to any aspect of the race involving officials and/or runners will be accepted only in written form. Filing fee of fifty percent (50%) of the amount of the prize being contested – non-refundable
12 Give-a-ways will be given to all finishers. Claim it together with the finisher’s certificate from the processing officials by showing your race number
