Born to Run 2011: A FUNd-RACING Event

Tuloy Foundation, Inc is a non-government, not-for-profit organization registered with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission in 1996 and licensed and accredited by the Department of Social Welfare and Development to “provide residential care services for children and youth”. It was founded in 1993 by Fr. Marciano “Rocky” G. Evangelista of the Salesians of Don Bosco. Their mission is to provide a center of excellence in the rehabilitation of street children though a comprehensive program of caring, healing and teaching (http://www.tuloyfoundation.org)

My passion to run with a purpose led me to create a team of volunteer runners to help me organize a thanksgiving birthday run and raise funds for Tuloy Foundation. “Born to Run 2011: A FUNd-RACING Event” will be held on November 30, Wednesday (Holiday), from 5:00-10:00am, at the ULTRA Oval. The race events include 10KM, 5KM, and a 400meter dash for the kids. Registration fees will be waived. Instead, runners may donate any amount they are willing to give.

Number bibs, Timing System & Method
- Each athlete of Marathon, Half Marathon and Mini Marathon will be provided a number bib and a timing chip (in case the athlete does not have his own chip)
- The number bib and chip have to be worn properly during the competition
- Each participant will receive one number bib that must be put on the chest. In case the number bib or the timing chip is missing or wearing in the wrong place, the Organizing Committee reserves the right to disqualify the runner’s result
- ChampionChip is the timing system used for the race, it provides Personal Times (Chip Time/Net Time) and Official Time (Gun Time) for each athlete. Results will be based on the Official Time in accordance with IAAF Standards
- On any condition, number bib and timing chip cannot be exchanged with or transferred to other athletes; or else, the athletes will be disqualified and no certificate will be provided
- Athletes can choose to use their own chips or the chip provided by the Organizer

Camp Run 2011

The CAMP RUN™ SERIES 2011 is a series of running events schedule throughout the year at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. The series will feature a unique race format and a novel route for the runners in a military-themed event setting. This series is tailored to focus and encourage continuous participation rather than competitiveness, and is ultimately envisioned to become a nationwide program

PHP100 pesos of the registration fee will be awarded to the different foundations (e-media, 57/75 Reverse the Educational Crisis, Adopt A School Foundation, HERO Foundation)to address the educational crisis in our country

Important Notice
As per AFP regulation, all participants are advised to bring and present at least one valid ID. This will be checked at the camp gates upon entry. Run Clinic
After the race, Coach Jojo Macalintal and his coaching team will be leading a demo on proper running form and provide instruction on drills and techniques to improve your run.

Rules and Regulations
1 All Participants are required to complete and sign the Official Entry form containing the requisite Waiver/Release declaration. Submission of the signed Official Entry form or participation in the race as a registered Participant (even in the absence of a genuine signature in the Official Entry form) shall serve as conclusive confirmation of (a) the Participant's consent to the Waiver/Release printed in the Official Entry form and (b) the Participant's agreement to abide by the rules and regulations of the Camp Run™ Series 2011.
2 While every reasonable precaution will be taken by the Organizers to ensure the Participants' safety, it is understood that Participants run at their own risk and the Organizers shall not be responsible or held liable for any injury, disability or death arising from training or occurring during participation in the race. Participants are strongly encouraged to undergo medical check- up and/or consult medical practitioners prior to registration and before the actual race day.
3 Participants must wear the assigned Bib Number on his/her chest. Participants not wearing Bib Number will be taken off the course by security officers and will be banned in participating in future Camp Run™ Series races.
4 Partial Road Closure will be lifted after two (2) hours from the commencement of the first race. Participants will then continue on the footpath at their own risk.
5 A Participant must retire from the race immediately, if required to do so by any member of the official medical staff, Race Director, and Security Officer.
6 Pets, bicycles, in-line skates, prams, push carts, shoes with built-in or attached rollers and any other wheel run objects are not allowed on the course other than official race and medical vehicles.
7 Once registration has been duly processed, there will be no entry fee refund for Participants who for whatever reason do not eventually take part in the Camp Run™ Series 2011.
8 There will be no entry fee refund if the event is cancelled on account of force majeure or for causes beyond the reasonable control of the Organizers.
9 The Organizers reserve the right to use any photographs (including those of Participants), motion pictures, recordings or any other media records of the Camp Run™ Series 2011 for any legitimate purpose, including commercial advertising, without giving monetary consideration to any Participant.
10 The Organizers reserve the right to limit and/or refuse entries without giving any reason.
11 The Organizers will not entertain nor be in any way responsible for any disputes arising from incomplete entry details.
12 Race routes may be subject to changes for safety and traffic reasons.
13 Race category and race entry are strictly non-transferable.
14 Participants who commence before the actual start time of his/her Race will be disqualified. 15 Participants under 18 years must have the waiver signed by a parent.
16 The organizers decision is final.
17 For all other Participants, disputes and appeals regarding the results must be submitted in a written format, including electronic mail within 3 days from the race day. Organizers reserve the right to not entertain any dispute or appeal after the given grace period.

Race Review: Adidas King of the Road 2011


Here comes another race review - Adidas King Of The Road KOTR 2011

Good Points
- Registration (seemless online registration)
- Singlet (couldn't expect anything less since its Adidas)
- Bib (mine was personalized and got my name on it)
- Race Kit Collection (NBC tent served as a good venue and got mine quickly)
- Site (dedicated site which contained up-to-date information)
- Timing (used organizer's own timing chip - a nice souvenir)
- Coral Management (personnel was doing their best to keep other distance runners at bay)
- Gun Start (the herd of 21k runners were released on time)
- Distance (the 21k route was all too familiar and accurate)
- Portalet (there were several portalets along the route and in the activity area)
- Hydration (cold water and Powerade was served)
- Hydration (stations was strategically placed along the route)
- Trash Bins (one of those few races who provided one)
- Banana (there were at least 2 banana stations along the route)
- Sponge (several water stations had sponge being distributed)
- Route (16.8k runners got a taste of Buendia flyover)
- Route (very fairly straightforward and difficult to get lost)
- Safety Cones (they've placed several safety pylons along the route)
- Timing mat (a timing mat was available to record our time splits)
- Timing mat (placed at turnaround points to discourage cheaters)
- Marshal (several were stationed along the route)
- Marshal (some i find cheerful, some were respectful, and some were apologetic)
- Medic (they were scattered along the route and ever ready to provide assistance)
- Ambulance (at least saw one in the finish line area)
- Kilometer markers (appreciated that there's marker for every kilometer)
- Directional sign (ample signs was available)
- Photo (official and volunteer photographers were scattered)
- Finisher's Medal (a real medal this time compared to last year)
- Finisher's Loot Bag (got mine in record time)
- Finisher's Distribution (tents were separated by distances)

Areas for Improvement
- Registration fee (i find the price point above than normal)
- Host (i wished it was Boy Ramos because he makes sense and can relate to the runners)

Couldn't Comment/Other Observations
- Baggage Counter (didn't notice if there was a long queue)
- Race results (expecting for the official results to come out in 2 days)
- Beneficiary (couldn't identify if there was a bonafide beneficiary)
- Photo Booth/Wall (didn't notice if there was any)
- Post-event Activity Area (did not linger long enough to see what was going on)
- Fire Trucks (none was seen though I personally don't like a shower or get my shoes drenched)

My Thoughts
I only expected the best out from this event since it was handled by RunRio. And it did not disappoint. The difference between this year and last year's race was night and day.  I did not have to beg for water or pick one from the sidewalk.  It is definitely a good call made by Adidas Philippines to bring in a reputable race organizer this time

There are just so few to nitpick about this race so I am keeping this review very short.  With that, I just want to say thanks to Adidas and RunRio for a job well done.  To those who crossed the finish line (and did not cut corners), congratulations to you!

They're All Running ADOBO! Are You?

Seemingly the stars will align on October 29 at the adobo Run After Dark at Aseana City (near Mall of Asia). Big names from the entertainment industry, business sector, and the running scene are all taking part in the 2nd edition of the novel night run, which promises to have a lot of spectacles

Major corporations such as Meralco, McDonald's, St. Luke's Medical Center, Pocari Sweat, Manila Beer, Toby's, Runnr, R.O.X., Video Sonic, Studio 58 Lab 10, Soleus, MyPhone, print media giants The Philippine Star, The Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Business Mirror, Business World, Inquirer.net, sports magazines thebullrunner, Multisport, Frontrunner, sports cable channel Balls TV, and top FM station Mellow 94.7 have banded together for this distinctive footrace event in support of its main beneficiary Isang Litrong Liwanag project headed by notable social entrepreneur Illac Diaz. Asia Brewery big boss Bong Tan himself has confirmed his participation in the race.

For the post-race activities, Ebe Dancel, noted former vocalist of Sugarfree, will be jamming with the race participants who are in for some wholesome rock party. Also provide rocking beats at the race are top band Stonefree and rising indie band Blue Boy Bites. Other standout bands from the music scene will sustain the live performances at the adobo Run.

On the serious side of running, top Filipina marathoners Mercedita Manipol and Joan Banayag are all set to claim the spotlight in the 5k and 15k categories, respectively. This will be the first time Manipol and Banayag will compete in a night run. Providing, however, top-class competition to our home-grown running heroines are the formidable slew of Kenyan runners.

Possibly going to elicit shrieks and provide celebrity appeal to the event are the sure participation of GMA Artist Center's rising jewel Gwen Zamora. Gwen will don her erstwhile Cinderella costume of the telefantasya fame Grazilda as she joins the 3k category. Illac Diaz himself will be in a general's costume as he runs with a whole platoon of real-life soldiers in the 5k category. Noted sports host and personality Rovilson Fernandez and ace comedian Bearwin Meily would prefer to keep their costumes under wraps even as they set their sights in setting their respective personal bests in the virtually flat course of the 15k category. Several more celebrities are reportedly going to make surprise participation in their chosen race categories in the adobo Run, undoubtedly the biggest night race of the year.

And to further provide excitement to male participants, the Playboy Playmates will be donning their titilating bunny outfits as they strut it out throughout the 3k course

HSBC Fun Run 2011

The HSBC Anniversary Fun Run will be held on November 26, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia. The run is open to all individual, with categories of 3KM, 5KM, and 10KM distances. A special 100 meter dash is prepared for kids 6 years and below

All proceeds raised from the run will be donated to the Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation (SAS), a not-for-profit, professional Philippine organization that promotes the love and habit of reading in Filipino children in line with its vision to build a nation of readers.

Race Recap: Nike Run Manila 2011


Twenty Three.  My plan was to cover 23 kilometers last Saturday as part of my base building program to prepare for my upcoming Afroman distance in RU3 2011.  So I got up from our couch and arrived in BGC by 3:35PM.  This gives me more an hour and a half to cover 13 kilometers before I head to the assembly area.  Unfortunately, there were no clouds in sight and it was scorching hot.  I waited and waited, hoping that a herd of clouds would cover me from the heat. 

Rizal Drive.  An hour later and the situation did not change a bit.  There I was in the parking area of BGC thinking what else can I do.  Decided to check out Rizal Drive wishing that the tall buildings would provide sufficient shade for a 30-minute run.  Five minutes later.  I was ecstatic, almost jumped in joy, when I saw that my assumption was correct.  Without a second to waste, I strapped my heart rate monitor on and immediately ran

Heart Rate.  Since I bought my Timex watch more than a year ago, I wasn't able to fully utilize it as a training tool.  Being new to the sport, an HRM watch was too much too handle.  A total waste of money if I may say.  I toyed with it for a couple of months but without a program to follow, I just gave up the idea and just used it to record my race times. 

Knee Injury.  Because of my recurring knee injury, I couldn't pursue my original training plan (speedwork on Tuesdays, tempo on Thursdays, and long runs on weekends).  The moment I start hitting a sub-5 minutes per kilometer pace, my right knee begins to hurt.  With that, I had to find an alternative that would enable me to increase my mileage without hurting myself in the process.  And I found one

Zone 3.  I thought running between 72-78% of my maximum heart rate would be easy.  I was wrong!  It was hard, really hard.  This translates to running between 2-3 minutes slower than my usual.  I am not used to this speed when I train, so my first kilometer was a mess.  My heart rate would jump up to 85% and I had to take walk breaks just to lower it down.  There are also since instances that it got too low (67%) which forces me to crank it a notch.  Finding the sweet spot was a hit and miss as the allowed range was only 10 heart beats per minute

5:20PM.  Nike's official gun start is at 5PM and had a 20 minutes leeway.  That meant I had a total of 50 minutes.  Since I don't want to push my luck, I just gave myself 40 minutes and managed to cover at least 5 kilometers.  By the time I got in the assembly area, most of runners already flooded the streets of BGC.  It felt surreal and exclusive when I crossed the start/finish arc alone.  It was like the road ahead is all for me for the taking.

Eight Thousand.  With the huge turnout, I only expected the worst.  Surprisingly the crowd was sufficiently managed and there was enough water to hydrate everyone.  I have to admit there are still some room for improvements but the one who needs to improve are the runners themselves.  I noticed that most runners needs to brush up about running etiquette or at least spent a few minutes to read the race info sheet that was provided.

Killed By Boredom.  Since I was limited to run within Zone 3, the long flat road stretched endlessly.  I was tempted several times to run a bit faster so I can already cross the finish arc and head home.  Right there and then, I understood how hard it is going to be in the coming months.  Running hard and fast is difficult already but running slow is even more tougher.  This type of training requires a lot of patience, determination and a slather of sun screen. Finished the race in (unofficial) 1 hour 20 minutes

We Run Manila 2011. This is my first night race and a very memorable one.  The singlet is really nice and very well made.  The bag that came with, my mom loved it.  I am no big fan of posters but what the heck at least I will always remember this international event everytime I'd see it.  The 2GB USB is comin' on our way and I can't wait the day it arrives.  They even got portalets along the route.  Kudos to Nike, RunRio, and all participants!

1 What if it rains on Race Day?
If there is lightning in the area of the race will either have a delayed start or, depending on the intesity of the weather, be postponed.  The official announcement will be made by the Event Management staff
2 Can I transfer my registration to another person?
No.  Your registration and race bib are non-transferrable
3 Upon submitting my registration form, can I still change some details?
No.  Please make sure that all details in your registration form are complete and correct
4 Are dogs allowed on course?
No.  Only ODIE is allowed in the premises
5 Can I have my singlet exhanged after ordering
No.  Singlets ordered are final
6 Is there a time limit in reaching the finish line?
No.  You may run at your own pace.  Medic will be stationed at certain points along the way
7 Can I run without my race bib?
No.  You may not.  Race bibs must be worn at all times
