Two-time champion and MILO Marathon national record holder Jho-An Banayag ruled the 42-k women’s division, as Jason Agravante dominated the men's division, Sunday in the record-breaking Metro Manila Leg of the 36th National MILO Marathon at the Mall of Asia (MOA) grounds in Pasay City. Nestle Philippines officials expressed elation over the heavy 38,429 runners who participated in the prestigious event, which shattered last year's 35,000 turnout
Thirty year-old Banayag showed no sign of weakness and maintained her swift pace from the early stages of the track to the finish line, clocking in at 3:02:20. A far second behind Banayag was Jennelyn Nobleza of Silay City at 3:17:44, followed by veteran Luisa Raterta who clocked in at 3:23:55
After six years of participation, the 23-year-old Agravante of Silay City finally secured his first major title, topping the men’s category in 2:39:57. He relegated brothers Elmer and Gerald Sabal to second and third place with 2:45:16 and 2:46:10, respectively
Meanwhile, in the men’s 21-k race, Rafael Poliquit Jr. finished first in 1:14:35, while Nhea Ann Barcena topped the women’s category in 1:33:38. Also among today’s participants is Aklanon Mark Joseph “Aga” Casidsid, who successfully completed the 42-k track despite the challenges of being visually impaired. Of the 38,429 runners who competed in the MILO Marathon Metro Manila eliminations, over 2,000 runners registered for the 42-k race
To further MILO’s vision to inspire and equip underprivileged school children to excel in sports and in life, MILO’s “Help Give Shoes” advocacy program, which is now on its third year of staging, will provide 10,000 pairs of shoes to children nationwide. In Metro Manila alone, students from ten schools benefited from the program, namely San Rafael National High School, Ramon Magsaysay High School, Tibangan Elementary School, Gen. M. Hizon Elementary School, Pasay Science High School, Tatalon Elementary School, Carlos Albert High School, and Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School

Press Release: Sermona Defies Bad Weather
ANGELES CITY, July 22, 2012: Not even the bad weather could stop former MILO Marathon King Julius Sermona and Merdeliza Dizu from topping the fourth leg of the 36th National MILO Marathon held Sunday. Over 6,150 registered runners participated in the race leg, as Angeles City hosted the MILO Marathon elims for the first time. Sermona, a former member of the Philippine National Team, defied the heavy downpour and crafted a time of 1:13:02
Sermona claims that training for the qualifying race is his foundation for the finals. “I focused on endurance training, road running, a once-a-week work out, and hard training,” he said. “For the finals, I plan to increase the volume and intensity of my routine. I plan to run a few short-distance divisional races and add about 5 to 10-k to my training as well”
Not to be outdone, Merdeliza Dizu stamped class when she outraced fellow veteran Geralden Sealza in the final 200 meters to top the women’s division. Sealza settled for second place with a clocking of 1:37:21, followed by Marychiel Minas-Morales with a time of 1:42:04
“Since school started this June, I have been training everyday for an hour. I focus on endurance since I’m used to being a mid-distance runner,” said Dizu. “This is actually the first time I ran the 21-k track. I’m very happy to win”
To further MILO’s vision to inspire and equip underprivileged school children to excel in sports and in life, MILO’s “Help Give Shoes” advocacy program, which is now on its third year of staging, will provide 10,000 pairs of shoes to children nationwide. In Angeles City, five schools received shoes through the advocacy program, including Angeles Elementary School, Cutud Elementary School, Teodoro P. Tinio Elementary School, Belen Homesite Elementary School and Abelardo Tinio Elementary School

My Thoughts
When I learned that there was a team category for the 16km distance, I forced 9 other teammates into signing-up. I thought that it would be nice if there were at least 10 of us in a race. A rare sight. Race day came. Was in the parking lot and had 5 minutes to spare. I was already hungry. The small bowl of oatmeal I had that morning wasn't enough to fill mah tummy. Jesy and Romp arrived at the venue the same time as well. We all walked towards the starting arc. The rest of the guys were already there. Then the first surprise came in. Gun start will be delayed. Boo! I checked a food stall. They were only serving sandwiches. I figured it would be too heavy. On top of that I didn't have any money with me. Sigh. I just walked away
The sun was up already. The 10-milers were now in front of the starting line. Bearwin was then asking the organizers if we are now allowed to run. He asked 'em at least five times. I gave an evil smirk. What kind of organizer who doesn't coordinate with their host/emcee? Deemen had his expectations low. Really low. I should've done the same. My mistake
First water station came in a little bit early. It was weird. Perhaps it was designed that way to cater for the lower distances. And oh, water was being poured to the cups using a dipper. Incredible! Then we saw the next water station. The distance between 'em was too short. My opinion? They should've separated it at least a mile. We were now on our first U-turn. Deemen mentioned that we will be running along Sucat Rd. This is the most interesting part of the race since we will be running along with both private and public vehicles. I was keen on how the organizers would handle it. Then we saw the other runners going up the flyover and not exiting Sucat Rd. Perhaps we needed to cover a few more kilometers before we are led into the treacherous part of the route
After scaling the flyover, we saw a U-turn marker for 16km but saw the rest still pounding the road onwards. No marshals spotted. Right there and then we deduced that it is going to be a loop. Then it started. Water cups went missing. Water were still available. Drinking on the container lids was the only option. The road ended. It was our 2nd turnaround. Again, no loop cords was given. So I can cheat? Not that I was thinking of doing it. But how about those aiming for a podium finish?
Things just got even worst on our second loop. Our teammates were already complaining. No water. Deemen held his bottled water ever so tightly. We filled it up on the next water station. I pity those who were drinking straight from the dipper. Cant bear the scene. Better hydrate than lose consciousness because of thirst. The organizers should've acted swiftly on this matter. Its just sad that they didn't do anything about it.
I know this is the first time that PURE CONCEPT staged a race. But they should've have covered the basics. The organizers placed their participants at risk. Shame on PURE CONCEPT. I hope that they would review their mistakes and make sure they won't commit the same

Alaska IronKids Triathlon 2012
This August, all eyes will be on Cebu Province as it hosts this year’s much-anticipated sporting event for kids — Alaska IronKids Triathlon
More than a hundred triathletes, 6 to 14 years old, are expected to show up at the starting lines at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort on August 5, hopefully surpassing the record number of 95 participants set last year at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili, Camarines Sur. With their parents and family in tow to cheer for them, the event promises to be a family affair to remember.
Expected to defend their titles are frontrunners and early race favorites Tara Borlain and Eric Almendral, last year’s winners in the 6-8 y/o cataegory; Sophia Marie Vizcarra and Lance Vincent Plaza, winners of the 11-12 y/o category; and Magali Echauz and Justine Kyle Mapalo, winners of the 13-14 y/o category. Those interested can still join. Just log on to www.ironkidsphil.com. Registration is ongoing.
Alaska IronKids is the junior counterpart of the world-renowned triathlon event IronMan where kids 6 to 14 years old race through three sporting events: Swimming, Biking and Running. The race is divided into four age categories: 6-8 years old, 9-10 y/o, 11-12 y/o and 13-14 y/o. It is open to kids who are new to the sport as well as those who have already competed in other triathlon events.
A year-long sporting event, Alaska IronKids has so far completed three legs this year— two marathons, held at University of Makati and Mall of Asia and an aquathlon, held at the Palms Country Club. Another triathlon is scheduled on October 23 at Pico de Loro, Batangas).
Since its inception in 2010, Alaska IronKids has become a symbol for active and healthy lifestyle among kids. Its successful races have encouraged kids to take care of their bodies through exercise and proper nutrition and have instilled in them commitment and discipline, all of which are advocacies of the Alaska Milk Corporation. In addition, Alaska IronKids has also become a venue where families can bond and support each other.
Among the sponsors of Alaska IronKids Triathlon are Alaska Milk Corporation as the title sponsor, Mc Donalds, Time Studio, Powerade, Prudential Guarantee, Private Iris, and Viva Mineral Water as the other sponsors

Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines 2012
The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines takes to the sea in Cebu as the province hosts its fourth staging as well as the Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon on August 4 – 5, 2012.
After racing in a man-made lake the past three years participants will swim in open water as the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines holds the 1.2-mile swim part in the sea starting at the beach of the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa in Mactan Island.
The province of Cebu will literally host the event with the 56-mile bike ride traversing four municipalities ( LapuLapu, Mandaue, Cebu City and Talisay). The culminating 13.1-mile run will be at Punta Engano, LapuLapu City.
Race organizer Sunrise Events, Inc. promises to top the wildly successful races of the past three years assuring that that this year’s race will be its biggest, most exciting edition yet.
A huge field of 1,319 individuals and 115 relay teams from 31 countries, with 350 on the wait list, will test their strength and endurance once again as Ironman 70.3 Philippines provides another once-in-a-lifetime triathlon experience.
Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon on the other hand is for the youngsters. It is the local junior version of the international triathlon series, Ironman. It is open to kids age 6 to 14 years old and aims to promote an active lifestyle for kids to promote their health.
Leading the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines are the professional triathletes including back-to-back champion Pete Jacobs of Australia. Jacobs, who has become a regular fixture of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, will gun for an unprecedented third consecutive victory after winning the past two editions in 2010 and 2011.
He will have his hands full against Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines inaugural champion Terenzo Bozzone from New Zealand who won the 2009 race. Other male professionals include Fredrik Croneborg from Sweden, Justin Granger from Australia, Mathieu O’Halloran of Alaska TeamTBB Philippines who now lives in the Philippines and Jesse Thomas from the United States.
Defending champion Belinda Granger, also from Australia who is fresh from her triumph at the Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon in Subic, aims for back-to-back titles against familiar face Bree Wee from the United States who was in third place last year. Ali Fitch of Alaska TeamTBB Philippines from Australia will also be in the mix.
Addendum: World Class Filipino Designer Kenneth Cobonpue designs the Cobra Ironman 70.3 2012 Medals. No details was shared during the press conference on what it will look like but he says that it is going to be the prettiest Ironman medal we've even seen. Can't wait to see how it will like look

BFD and Deemen Gets Close To Petronas
As promised, here's the 2nd part of Team Alpha's Malaysian invasion. Since it has started with a photoblog it is only fitting that we shall continue with another one. The 1st part in case you missed it
More of day2 (Genting Highlands) on my next blog post
![]() |
| I'd have to say that their train system is just awesome. It allows anyone to go anywhere with ease. KLCC station was only several stops away from KL Sentral. Petronas, here we come! |
![]() |
| As soon as we climbed out the train station, this was the view that welcomed us. "Whoah!", I uttered. Petronas Tower in its grandeur. You have to walk towards the right in order to see both towers |
![]() |
| When I saw the skybridge, I remembered the movie Entrapment (by Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones) |
![]() |
| Here's another shot of the majestic structure |
![]() |
| Want to visit the skybridge? You need to break the piggy bank. Ticket price is RM80 and service charge costs RM50. So a trip to the bridge brings us to a whooping RM130. We just looked the other way |
![]() |
| This was the reason. It sent chills down my spine. We spent the next 35 minutes rummaging the clothes inside. It was close to 1040AM when we decided to go back to KL Sentral |

BFD and Deemen Invades Malaysia
Since I am too lazy to write our adventures (and misadventures) in Kuala Lumpur, here's another photoblog. Please forgive the images as I was using a camera phone. No race report/review here.
![]() |
| It was already 7PM and we still had at least an hour left before the race packet collection center closes. The next logical step was to get on a cab and head towards Merdeka Square |
![]() |
| Personalized bib. Size of finishers shirt already indicated. Singlet was rather big. Towel for full marathoners only. Some stuff from the event's sponsors. Runner's guide filled with advertisement |
![]() |
| Our hotel. Got Subway in the ground floor. Near a monorail. Two shopping malls within the vicinity. Several fast food chains and a Starbucks. Thanks SpringtingSwine for the recommendation! |
![]() |
| Petronas Towers. Taken this picture to where I've taken the picture above (KL Tower). You'd immediately get the idea how 'far' we were. That ends our day 1 in Malaysia. Day 2 will be posted soon |
