41st National MILO Marathon Davao Leg

Hard work and passion equipped the athletes during the 41st National MILO Marathon Davao leg on Sunday, October 22. Richeel Languido and Judelyn Miranda emerged triumphant as they landed first place at the 21K half marathon. Almost 10,000 runners conquered the streets to race for the finish line. Training directors of the Philippine Olympic Committee, and celebrity training coaches Jim and Tony Saret led the pre-race warm up sessions for the elite athletes and category runners, respectively.

Richeel Languido earned the top spot at the 21K half marathon with 1:15:14 at the clock, closely followed by Michale Echalieco (1:18:29) and Arnie Macaneras (1:20:19). Meanwhile, over at the female division, Judelyn Miranda, who also topped the Davao leg in the 39th National MILO Marathon in 2015, clocked in at 1:32:07, followed by Vivian Avegonzado at 1:41:38 and Lalaine Payricio at 1:42:22. Supporters should expect to see the two winners once again at the National Finals in Cebu City on December 3 to try and claim the title of MILO Marathon King and Queen.

It was clear that the 31-year old Richeel Languido was in the perfect condition to win the competition. He dominated the field and was ahead of everybody right from the start. Though it may seem that it was an easy challenge for him he admitted that the race was not an easy challenge. “I had a hard time going back since the route was uphill and it is also my first time in Davao. Luckily, I was able to make it up in the last 3K or 4K,” says Languido. He shared his training regimen which comprised of an hour and a half run before heading to work and a 30-minute jog before heading home. Richeel plans on bringing his wife and children along with him for the CDO leg; “It’s fun to join the MILO Marathon. You get to bond with your friends. I plan to bring my wife and kids to the CDO race so they can experience the thrill and excitement for themselves”.

The National MILO Marathon will continue in Butuan (November 12) and Cagayan De Oro (November 19). The National Finals in Cebu City will be on December 3.

“Masaya kami kasi ang 7-Eleven ay walang sawa na pinadadala kami sa ganitong international race.” said Lany Cardona who together with Rafael Pescos were given a slot to race in the Shonan International Marathon happening on December in Kanagawa, Japan with all expenses paid, as part of their prize for winning in the 42km category of this race.

Nine Filipino runners participated in this morning’s race, four of them in the full marathon while five in the half-marathon – a fulfillment of the commitment given by Philippine Seven Corporation (7-Eleven Philippines) to the top 3 (male and female) marathon and full marathon winners of the 7-Eleven Run that was held in the Filinvest City, Alabang last February.

According to Project Head Ms. Michelle Saludes, “We at 7-Eleven want to give Filipino runners not part of the Philippine Team the opportunity to showcase their abilities and be recognized in an international competition.”

Local and foreign participants coming from 50 countries, competed in the Da Nang International Marathon 2017 where the route brought the experience of running through Da Nang’s beautiful coastline passing the bridges across the poetic Han’s river in the middle of the city during sunrise.

This is the fifth year that 7-Eleven Philippines has brought Filipino runners to an international race giving them full support from taking care of all expenses, pocket money and with the help of sponsor Asics Tiger, a complete race suit.

“We will continue to encourage runners who aspire to represent the country in an international competition through the 7-Eleven Run Series which we are planning to expand by having another race in Cebu before the year ends and which will serve as a qualifying race to the 7-Eleven Run happening in Manila next year.” shared Mr. Jose Ang Jr., General Merchandise Division Head.

The participation of Filipino runners was made possible through the effort of Philippine Seven Corporation together with the support of sponsors Safeguard, Selecta Ice Cream, Pocari Sweat, Del Monte, Nature’s Spring, Summit Water, Dole Pineapple, Powerade, Solar Sports, CNN Philippines, Skyway, Filinvest and Asics.

Veterans Ruled the Pilot Race in Urdaneta

In true festive fashion, the city of Urdaneta showed its overwhelming enthusiasm in the first race of the 41st National MILO Marathon. Around 12,000 runners hit the streets to race the finish line. Running veterans Julius Sermona and Christabel Martes took the spotlight and placed first in the 21K male and female categories, respectively. They each took home the top purse of P10,000 in cash and a trophy, and booked their slots to the National Finals in Cebu on December 3 to try and claim the MILO Marathon King and Queen titles.

In the male category, Julius Sermona clocked in with the time of 1:15:31, followed by Hernani Sore in the second place (1:17:21), and Romulo Ballnas Jr. in the third place (1:20:45). In the female category, Christabel Martes posted a time of 1:23:45, while Rowena Valdez finished second place (1:47:12), and Quipsie Isabel Milagros in third (1:54:10).

Sermona believes that joining marathons not only stimulates one athlete’s passion for running, it also provides physical fitness. “Running, for me, is all about health,” he said. “Physical fitness is integral to a runner’s development, especially to the kids and I am very proud to be a part of a community that promotes these values.”

In the distaff side, former SEA Games athlete Martes easily raced her way to the finish line. Augmented by the spacious roads and smooth terrain, the Baguio native revealed that the features enabled her to comfortably outpace her closest competitors, “I just stayed at my own pace,” she said. “I am very pleased with the route and it helped me stayed in the lead from start to finish.”

With a new feather on her cap, Martes shared that humility remains to be her most important value. “Whenever I win, I always remind myself to be humble,” she said. “I am happy and thankful to be called as an inspiration to many, and I hope that I continue to do so while keeping my feet on the ground.”

More than a staunch advocate of Philippine sports and Filipino athletes, the National MILO Marathon is also a platform that empowers children nationwide. For the past 7 years, the National MILO Marathon’s Help Give Shoes advocacy, in partnership with Department of Education, has inspired 70,000 aspiring athletes to fulfill their dreams by donating brand new pairs of running shoes. This year, the Help Give Shoes advocacy will be donating 5,000 pairs to underprivileged school children.

The National MILO Marathon will continue in Laoag (July 23), Metro Manila (July 30), Angeles (August 6), Tarlac (August 13), Naga (August 27), Lucena (September 03), Lipa (September 10), Tagbilaran (September 24), Roxas (October 1), Iloilo (October 8), General Santos (October 15), Davao (October 22), Butuan (November 12), and Cagayan De Oro (November 19). The National Finals in Cebu City will be on December 3.

adidas x Parley Run for the Ocean

adidas and Parley for the Oceans announced their first global initiative with the launch of adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans, a global celebration that took place during World Oceans Day week (June 5th-11th).

adidas, Parley for the Oceans and Runtastic have come together, harnessed the power of sport as a catalyst to inspire positive action, and motivated people to get behind the cause, with each step spreading awareness of the threat plastic pollution poses to the oceans. adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans enabled all athletes to unite through running and became part of the clean oceans movement that made a difference in everyone’s lives.

Runners from around the world united virtually and showed their commitment to ocean health, one mile at a time. As they run, people listened to a dedicated Story Run and learn about the ocean’s delicate ecosystem, the Parley AIR strategy and how they can all be part of the solution. Runners contributed their mileage and helped spread the message.

During World Oceans Day, adidas x Parley’s first-ever Run for the Oceans brought their communities of runners, ocean ambassadors, environmentalists, artists, influencers and media together, inspired collective action and affected positive change in the world. Taking over New York City at night, a collective of over 500 runners took part in a 5km run illuminating the city streets with blue lights as they go, taking a stand for the conservation of our oceans.

To truly galvanize action through sport, and raise awareness by inspiring the masses to commit to the oceans, an innovative Runtastic Cardio App feature has been created. This Story Run, curated by a team of ocean advocates, is based on unconscious interval training and serves as an ongoing source for raising awareness of the cause.

Tabal Victorious in Tamarack Ottawa Race

Ottawa, Canada – Logging another record-breaking feat, MILO Marathon Queen Mary Joy Tabal has clinched first place in the women’s division of the half marathon category of the Ottawa Race. The elite runner from Cebu not only bested her personal record, she also marked a significant milestone for breaking the Philippine record time for the 21K race. The Ottawa Race slot was Tabal’s grand prize for winning the 40th National MILO Marathon National Finals in Iloilo last 2016.

Known as the Canada’s largest and fastest marathon, the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend is one of two International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Gold Label races in the country, attracting a world contingent of about 43,000 runners because of its flat and fast race course.

Tabal clocked in with a time of 1:16:29, beating the old Philippine half-marathon record of 1:18:45. The 27-year-old elite runner gained an insurmountable lead against other 13,446 contenders, placing 1st in the women’s category, and 8th in the overall male and female category.

The minor intermittent leg pains did not cause Tabal to flail during the race. She instead kept a strong and swift pace, which eventually aided her to successfully complete her rally to the finish line. “I did not expect to win,” she said. “My only target was to break my personal and the Philippine 21K record but I am so happy that I was able to exceed my performance and win the women’s race!”

Tabal attributed her victory to the comprehensive training she had undergone in Cebu and Italy, to which she finds as no easy feat. “Training with other world-class elite runners is a different ballpark,” she said. “However, it helped me gain confidence, and I also got the best motivation from my coaches and my teammates. Their trust in my abilities pushed me to believe in myself and persevere to be even better.”

“I am once again grateful to all the supporters who have been following my journey and to MILO for giving me this opportunity. MILO is very close to my heart because they are always with me wherever I go to compete,” she said. “I am very proud to achieve this victory with MILO!”

MilestonePod. Make Any Shoe Smart

Make any shoes smart with the MilestonePod, your portable run lab. Pair with the MilestonePod App to uncover unique run/walk data and insights. Because HOW you run matters! For no extra effort, you will get cadence, stride length, ground contact, foot strike, rate of impact, leg swing and total shoe mileage. In addition, the Pod tracks basic performance measures like pace, distance, steps and calories - all in a fun and easy-to-use interface. Learn about your form and gait to improve performance, stay healthy and find the right shoe. Just clip the MilestonePod onto your shoe and go. There are no buttons, no charging and no need for a GPS signal. It works the same indoor or out. It's always on, already ready to collect your data. After you run, sync the Pod to your MilestonePod App in seconds. Do you use a GPS watch or app? No problem! Now you can get unique foot-based metrics too. The MilestonePod remains attached to your shoe for the life of your shoes, then can be reset and transferred to a new pair.

FAQ

Is the Pod ready right out of the box? What about calibration?
You must sync with the MilestonePod App BEFORE your first run or walk, to ensure the correct date and time. The Pod is about 94% accurate right out of the box. Like any tracking device, it may need calibrated one or two times. After proper calibration, you should expect 97% accurate or better. Calibration pushes a personalized algorithm to your Pod, based on your specific gait.

Does it matter where I attach the Pod on my shoe?
Yes. Placing the Pod 3/4 of the way down towards your toe provides the most accurate tracking. Specifically, if your shoe has a drop of 8mm or above, use the second lace cross from your toe. If your shoe has a drop below 8mm, use the third lace cross from your toe.

How does the Pod know when I run or walk?
The short answer is: when you hold a cadence of 100 steps per minute for at least 6 minutes. Here are all Pod’s parameters:
1 A “Session” starts when your cadence is 100 spm or more, for 6 minutes or more.
2 The Pod sees pauses and erases them. A “Pause” is a drop under 100 spm for less than 30 minutes. If a pause is longer than 30 minutes, the session will end.
3 A session is considered a “Run” when your cadence averages above 140 spm.
4 A session is considered a “Walk” is when your cadence averages above 100 spm and below 140 spm.
5 If a session is at least 60% “Running” (over 140 spm), the Pod will trim walks from the beginning and end of the session (i.e. warm-ups or cool-downs).
6 The Pod counts all walking and running within a session, as long as your cadence is above 100 spm.
7 The Pod counts every step towards the shoe life total (odometer feature) even if it’s not part of a Session.

How long will the Pod last?
With care, the Pod should last for multiple pairs of shoes. There are many Pods still in daily use from our first update in July 2014 – not bad for P1,695. When you are ready for new shoes, just “Reset” the Pod: Tap the Pod icon on the App Dashboard, choose RESET then follow the prompts. No data or run history will be lost!

What battery do I need when it’s time to replace?
The battery is a standard CR 2032 watch battery (Lithium 3v) that is easy to find. It sells for about P200 or less. It should last for 4-6 months, depending on amount of use. The Pod “sleeps” when not in use and when the sensor feels motion it wakes up and becomes active, which extends battery life.

Can I use my Pod on more than one pair of shoes?
It is strongly suggest you have a different Pod on each pair of shoes you run or walk in. The Pod is designed (and priced!) to live on one pair of shoes. Here is why:
1 Accuracy – you run differently in different shoes
2 Odometer feature – so you know exactly how many miles are on each pair of shoes
3 Calibration protection – when you calibrate, the value is for your gait cycle for that specific shoe; gait cycle often differs between shoe types

April 23, 2017 marks another of raising the public’s consciousness about environmental issues and health and fitness for National Geographic, which celebrates its eighth straight year of holding Earth Day Run. Presented by the channel and its partners Cherifer Premium and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Day Run 2017 aims to continue the tradition of being one of the biggest running events in the country, expecting scores of running enthusiasts and Eco Warriors to register and run for the environment. The event will be held not only in Manila but simultaneously in the cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Taichung, an initiative that was adopted last year and effectively spread the vision and advocacy of Earth Day Run across Asia.

At Earth Day Run 2017, National Geographic will be celebrating eight years of social awareness through fitness with special program features using the hashtag #8withEDR. With the hopes of mobilizing all the Eco Warriors of previous Earth Day Runs, this year’s event welcomes all previously registered participants with VIP treatment and special loyalty perks to be enjoyed on the day of the run. Participants from previous Earth Day Runs will be given priority placement in front of the starting line at the beginning of the race and can claim their loot bags and finisher shirt at a special express booth. They can also make use of a special warm-up and cool down tent before and after the race to condition themselves and recover in comfort.

What: NatGeo Earth Day Run 2017
When: April 23 2017
Where: SM Mall of Asia
Beneficiary: Ipo Watershed

Last year, Earth Day Run participants ran to benefit such causes as saving the Irawaddy dolphins at the Malampaya Sound Research and Conservation Project in Palawan; giving the Earth Hour or “Gift of Life” village in Monreal, Masbate sustainable solutions that reduce carbon footprint; conservation of the Marine Protected Area and coral reef in Apo Reef in Occidental Mindoro; and beefing up reforestation efforts in the Ipo Watershed in Bulacan, which supplies Metro Manila with fresh water. Registered runners at Earth Day Run 2017 will not only experience a fun day of outdoor fitness by joining this year’s event, but will also be doing their part in contributing to National Geographic’s environmental efforts.

Earth Day Run 2017 in Manila will be held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, where participants can join 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K categories. The event encourages and welcomes all types of Eco Warriors to take part, from fun-runners of all ages to the serious marathon runners who regularly compete. This year, Earth Day Run will also be sporting new features for its runners. As a special treat, all race kits will come with LED shoelaces, serving as a badge of pride and as a safety precaution for Eco Warriors running at night or before sunrise. Prizes will also be given to costumed runners who showcase their creativity by coming in their best ensemble made from recycled materials. Finally, to make each Eco Warrior’s voice heard in this run for the Earth, advocacy banners will be hanging above the finish line so that each runner can grab them as they cross to make a shout-out for the environment, keep as a souvenir, and use for all their post-run selfies to amplify the message of acting now to save the environment.

Defying Gravity

It's time to try defying gravity.  I think I'll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye I'm defying gravity.  And you won't bring me down

Exactly what I felt when I tried the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. When a good friend, Jeff, gave me a rundown of the treadmill I knew that I was in for a unique experience. I did look it up and saw why such device was made in the first place. Even knowing what it is, I still had no idea what to expect. There are just some things that you got to try out to get a better understanding.

They've asked me to don a tight neoprene shorts, it actually looked like a Tutu, which zips unto the treadmill’s air chamber that envelops your entire lower body. The machine first measures your body weight. Edman (clinic supervisor) chose 50% of my body weight that I will train at. The air chamber inflates around your lower body to achieve the desired pressure. Edman then increased the pace and he stopped at 8 minutes per mile.

I will be honest. I have not run at this pace for almost a year. I was ready to scream before I run out of air. Surprisingly I was able to sustain it. I would've been able to pull a PR if I had more time on the machine. Seriously. Much of the work was handled by the treadmill. I was running on a lighter load thus my knees and ankles had little pressure on them. Still on 50% of my weight, I was given a taste of 5 minutes per mile. Seriously quick. Took me about 10 seconds, maybe less, before I called it quits.

Now here comes the million dollar question(s). Is it worth your time? The benefits are unquestionable. You will be able to train with minimal pain, exercise more with reduced stress on joints and muscles, and recover effectively. Is it economical? It will set you back $30 for a 15-minute session with the AlterG. Yep, thirty bucks for fifteen. Let's get real here for a second, I wouldn't part my hard-earned money just to have a quarter of an hour on the treadmill. If it is an hour (or more), I just might book myself up for 10 sessions.

It makes a lot of sense if you are undergoing rehabilitation or recovering from a serious injury. It is a medical device after all. You will definitely need this if you are a competitive athlete backed with sponsors, or have deep pockets, that will give you access to this piece of technology. For a regular Joe, like you and me, who loves running as a form of recreation - this is something that you would want to put in the low end of your priority list. Do not let me take away the fun of experiencing AlterG. If you got the extra dough, visit their clinic and look for Edmar.

Rogin-E: Battle Gear for Success

Getting to the top requires a lot from you. Staying there demands even more. Balancing both work and your personal life, while keeping an active healthy lifestyle, can take a toll on both mind and body, even more as you age. This is why it is important to be equipped with all the right weapons.

What do you need to stay on top of your game?

Physical Endurance
Ace your work and personal life by having the capacity to give one hundred and ten percent to all your activities. Greater physical endurance enables you to stay energized when tackling multiple roles and responsibilities at work and at home. Take a multivitamin that contains Korean Panax Ginseng that enhances physical performance and improves endurance.

Mental Power
Crunch time? Prepare your mind by channeling positive energy and getting enough sleep. To optimize your mind’s maximum potential through long work hours, take a multivitamin with Deanol for improved concentration plus increased mental agility.

Vitality of spirit
When things don’t go your way, stay resilient, stay on course. Continue to work and believe in yourself. Keep the fire in you burning and sustain your success by staying positive and surrounding yourself with positive thinkers. Royal Jelly’s antioxidant properties can also give you youthful vitality so you can live life to the fullest.

Balance of work and play
To avoid burnout, be sure to make time for other interests and passions like golf, biking, or photography. Spend time with your family and loved ones to create moments that you can remember whenever life gets tough.

On February 18, Bayer Philippines held the Rogin-E ManCon 2017, at the Metro Walk Tent in Pasig—a whole-day event especially designed for men who want to stay on top of their game. Attendees were encouraged to try out activities that showcased different interests and passions. Think cars and motorbikes for those who love speed and mobility; sports activities for those who want to stretch the limits of their physical strength and power; fashion and grooming for those who have an eye for fashion; and a selection of toys and hobbies to engage a man’s mind and body.

Developed by Bayer, Rogin-E is a multivitamin especially formulated for men who want to be on top of their game, at work and at home. It contains Korean Panax Ginseng that enhances physical and mental endurance; Deanol for mental potency, improved concentration and mental agility; and Royal Jelly for youthful vitality. Rogin-E gives the extra energy that men need to do well in all his activities both at work and at play.

7-Eleven Skyway Marathon Review

Run 2017 promises to be bigger and more exciting, featuring the same categories as last year’s race. Just like last year, Skyway and Filinvest City will be an event venue partner for the 42KM, 21KM, 10KM, 16KM, 10KM, 10KM Buddy, 5KM, 3KM and 500 Meter (Kids run)
A lazy race review of the recently concluded 7-Eleven Skyway Marathon.

Excellent points..
Registration Fee. A tad cheaper than Condura Marathon. A full marathon will set you back at $31 versus Condura's $41.
Registration Sites. Pretty convenient. Reserve a spot using their website and pay on any 7-11 branch near you.
Hydration Station. Good job in this area. Plenty of water and sports drink along the course. Pineapple juice was available as well.
Portalet. Plenty! Couldn't ask for more. If there's only one gripe, it will be the missing portalets after the 15km mark
Loot. Some would call it swag. You'd be bringing home a box full of goodies if you have the patience lining up in the finisher's village.

Opportunities.
Race Route. It was supposedly a carbon copy of Condura's but changed at the last minute without prior notice.
Banana Station. I would've wanted more of this. Running on empty for several hours isn't a good sign. Bananas are cheap! Get more!
Last 2KM Mark. The person who placed that marker should be killed by the firing squad. It was FOUR kiometers away from the finish line.
Finishers Medal. Cheap material. Rather small. I guess you get what you pay for. Love love love Condura's medal.
Finisher's Shirt. So many things going on. Less is more. Just say "XXkm Finisher" at the back should suffice
Finish Line Experience. I was expecting a medal will be handed over at the finish line. Neville should know better.
Photographers. Very few of them. As of this writing, no picture of me was found.
Race Results. Can be found here. In a digital world that we live in, not even a partial list is available after 2 days.

My thoughts.
The full marathon crowd was rather thin. Unusually thin. Considering it is a rare opportunity for any athlete to be able to run the stretch of the skyway. I was expecting around two thousand participants. Never happened. Dunno why. Perhaps some folks forgot that the other (skyway) marathon ain't happening this year. Nonetheless, it is not a mediocre event. Unlike what PatCon insinuated in his facebook post. The Concepcion's had at least 8(?) years organizing their event. Comparing it with 7-Eleven would be unfair. Besides, they got RunRio. Believe me when I say I know what a mediocre race looks like. I have been with so many that I lost count. Bottom line, I will run it again next year.

Announcement: Legion Run Philippines

Hi!

It is with a heavy heart that we wish to inform you that Legion Run Philippines is CANCELED.

The success of Legion Run relies heavily on the obstacles that have been civil engineered, blueprinted and built by licensed contractors. Unfortunately, these need to be shipped from Bulgaria. We have bumped into a shipping problem and determined that it would be impossible to have the container vans arrive in time for the March 4 event in Greenfield City.

We are saddened that Legion Run won’t push through, but we hope you’ll support us when we’ve sorted things out and hopefully be able to return at a future time.

Twenty six miles in seven weeks

What did I get myself into this time? Proving that 2017 will be my comeback year, I volunteered myself as a pacer for a full marathon event. It was a decision I made roughly 10 weeks ago. I was thinking back then that I had plenty of time to safely rake in the mileage that I needed. I had 15 weeks! More than sufficient. Half of that went by with minimal training, now I have to accomplish something really, really difficult. (Kids, don't try this at home) My mission is to increase my mileage exponentially and be able to get my speed back without hurting myself doing the process.

At the time I am writing this entry, I know that it is an impossible feat however I still want to pursue this goal with the time that I have. Heck I wouldn't know if I don't try, right? The key element here is understanding my limits and if it is no longer fun then I know that I should call it quits. I know my running buddy will be disappointed if I'd back out especially that the event is just around the corner and knowing that it will be his first doing a full marathon. His spirit won't be crushed, I know that much, but it will be a huge letdown. I have a 21-mile run scheduled 3 weeks from now. That race will serve as a barometer if I am still up for the task.

Since it a race against time, I already started the year with a 6-mile run. After the run, I could already feel it in my left hip. I will be needing help and improve my biomechanics. Keeping my finger crossed that it will not burn a hole in my pocket. I have been ignoring my weak gluteal muscles and tight hamstrings, and the timing couldn't be better. Our bodies take a lot of beating during long distance running. Correcting my gait will definitely help me log more miles and improve my overall health. See you all on the road!
