My Last Last 5km Run. Avon Walk & Run

We'd usually hear or say last na ito (this would be the last) on stuff that we promised to let go or do something for the last time.  But then, we would find ourselves doing it again thus saying last na last na talaga (it would be the last, i promise)

Nature Valley was supposedly my last 5km for the year.  Back then, It was a sad moment since 5km was my favorite distance.  I had to give it up.  This was to prepare for my 10k run scheduled at the end of the year.  I needed to cover enough mileage by hitting longer distances

Never really imagined that after four months, I'd be running another 5k race.  Can't say that I'm excited.  Perhaps, a bit scared.  Avon's Walk & Run is set at MOA.  I know what you're thinking, the area is flat.  This place, apart from Quirino, is always good to set a new PR

And that is what I am afraid of

I am expecting to cross the finish line in less than 25 minutes.  But from my last tempo run, I can attain the pace that I need but I still do not have enough heart and lung power to sustain for the whole distance.  For now, I'll continue my regular running sessions every week and let's see how far I've come

RunRio Trilogy Leg 3: UNILAB Run United 2 [Info, Singlet, Race Map]

First, the online registration was made available.  Then it was the race information.  Next, the singlet design came out.  The next thing we will expect is the race map or route of Unilab's Run United 2

My take on it?  Here's what I saw in Manang Bola's crystal ball

They were all the race maps previously used in their 1st leg.  I am assuming that they will either recycle these routes or use this as a pattern for their race this coming November

How about the race map for the 32k runners?  There is a possibility of traversing the Kalayaan flyover and going around the Ayala triangle, this gives an additional 5.3 kms.  Or probably go all the way and run along Buendia similar to the 21k of KOTR.  It is also possible to run along Upper Mckinley which is roughly 2.7 kms.  And for the remaining 3 kms, one can extend the route in Lawton Ave from Bayani Rd to Duhat St

It will only be a matter of time, on how close (or far) the actual maps will be against the ones posted here.  For now, hope this serves road runners an idea on where to train and prepare for their chosen distances

Adidas King of the Road 2010

Registration starts tomorrow!  Besides the 70% price hike, what can we expect?

When you part with your P850, you'll get a black singlet.  And to be honest, I can't really tell what's the difference between and Men's and Women's singlet.  Can you spot the difference?  Then there's this reflective strap/slap that I have totally no idea what it looks like

You have the option to choose among three distances: 5k, 10k, and 21k

You may now be asking, "Where can I register?"
Visit any of these participating Adidas stores -- Trinoma, Greenbelt, Rockwell, Gateway, Glorietta, Shangri-la, Eastwood, Newport City, Alabang Town Center, and Ayala Center Cebu. You may also drop by at RUNNR (BHS) and RUNNR Cebu

Now, here's the $2M question.  Is there a finisher's medal?
Sometime in July, we were told that there will be medals to ALL runners

Then the people of Adidas retracted their statement saying that ONLY 21k finishers will get a medal

Are you disappointed?  Don't be.  Last year, they also promised the public that there will be finisher's medal as well.  But none was given.  So expect the unexpected.

Adidas wants to "turn the roads to Black on October 24 and experience a race like never before".  I do hope that it will not be their faces that will turn black.  And blue.  And red.  Adidas better deliver as the expectations are quite high

So what are you waiting for?  Go download and fill up the registration form, and head out.
See you on the road!

Is Barefoot Better

Bumped into an article from Wall Street Journal that talks about that running shoeless may be better.  An old entry but still a good read

Here's an excerpt
Runners and athletes are always searching for the perfect shoe to improve performance and reduce injury. But some say shoes are the problem, and the best solution may be training without them.

Some experts now believe that most athletic shoes, with their inflexible soles, structured sides and super-cushioned inserts keep feet so restricted that they may actually be making your feet lazy, weak and more prone to injury. As a result, barefoot training is gaining more attention among coaches, personal trainers and runners.

While exercising without shoes may sound painful, the idea is that your feet need a workout, too. Proponents believe running barefoot changes a runner's form and body mechanics to prevent some common athletic injuries.

Although a few coaches and marathon runners have preached the value of barefoot training, the method has received more attention lately because shoe giant Nike  is promoting its Nike Free shoe, which it claims mimics the sensation of running barefoot. Popular training methods aimed at improving running form, including the Pose Method (www.posetech.com) and ChiRunning (www.chirunning.com), also are prompting runners to consider minimalist foot gear or none at all as a way to allow their natural body mechanics to take over.

Timex Ironman Global Trainer GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor

Finally, Timex integrated GPS in their HRM.  This monster currently retails at $299.95.  Will probably wait until next year before I consider buying one.  I am still very satisfied with my Timex Ironman Race Trainer

But just simply looking at this watch, all I can say is I want one now!.  'Nuff said

Adidas End of Season Sale. Like a blockbuster movie

Yesterday, Jeff and I talked about going a bit early to the Adidas' head office.  That its better to head out as soon as we can so that we'll have a lot more of items to choose from.  Little did we know that tons of people had the same idea as ours.  Or should I say we were too naive.  And immediately realized that there are other tenants in the building who are after the huge discount as well.  As soon as we arrived, this is the first thing that we saw.  A very long line.  Outside the building.

A few minutes later, an Adidas personnel came out and gave us a numbered ticket stub.  This is to have some order in the chaos.  We were advised to come back by 2PM, that there were many people lining up in their office.  We were also told that some people came in as early as 7AM.  Wow!  They must've learned their lessons last year.  And for us, we are learning them just now

Good thing, Jeff got invited as a media partner.  Because of this, we managed to get in earlier than expected.  T'was funny when the all of the passengers in the elevator were getting off at the 38/f.  A few seconds more and we arrived at our destination.  This is the scene that we saw when we got there.  Please forgive the poor quality.  At least this gives you an idea how crowded it was this morning

Everyone was rummaging everything, and I mean everything, their hands can get on. The shirts, jackets, jeans, shoes, and jogging pants were all over the place.  And some were even on the floor.  It was a bit messy already.  Reminiscent of ukay-ukay.  It was like when my mom and I used to travel all the way to divisoria in order to get the stuff we need for a bargain.  This was far from what we've imagined.  I'd have to say, it was a bit chaotic

I guess choosing what you wanted even made it more difficult because of the mess.  You really have to sift through every piece of article there.  Which in effect, took the buyers more time that they intended to.

In the first 5 minutes we got in, a lady shouted that we only have 30 minutes left to shop, pay at the cashier, and get out of there.  This is to give chance to the other people waiting in line.  This probably triggered a frenzy among the buyers and me as well.  Before I knew it, I was grabbing every item that I think looks good then decide later which one to take home.  After awhile, I was holding on to a pair of jeans, and two jackets.  Where I decided to ditch them all because they were too pricey to begin with even with the huge discount

This is what I got before our limited time ran out.  They took 50% off from its regular price

If Adidas will have another sale by next year, will make sure that we will be at their doorsteps by 9am

New Balance Minimus. Made for barefoot runners

What did I say?  A new evolution to running is coming on our way.  It seems that New Balance has been moved by the barefoot running movement as well.  You guessed it right.  They will be coming up with a new product line which will be made available by March 2011 dubbed as NB Minimus

From Meet NB Minimus: An interview with Katherine Petrecca
NB Minimus is a barefoot-inspired line of shoes created specifically for runners seeking a truly minimalist experience. It’s a cross-category collection, including road running, trail running, and wellness shoes. By 'wellness' we mean shoes designed for people seeking a more natural stance throughout the day, even when they're not exercising

What can we expect?  Here's some information  I pulled out from their site
Drop:  'Drop' is the difference between heel height and toe height. All NB Minimus shoes have a 4mm drop which provides a more neutral foot position than traditional shoes (which average a 12mm drop)
My thoughts.  Asics Piranha SP also provide a 4mm drop (14mm heel; 10mm forefoot)  In my opinion they should gunned for a ZERO drop similar to Vibram Five Fingers.
Last:  The wider forefoot in NB Minimus allows your foot to expand naturally on impact
My thoughts.  Mimicking barefoot running should allow our toes to splay.  Wide toe box is the only way to go.  Good job NB!
Height:  To minimize distance from foot to ground, NB Minimus has no insert, minimal midsoles & outsoles, and is engineered to encourage a midfoot strike
My thoughts.  The thinner the better.  Since they've partnered with Vibram, I am expecting a 4mm solewhich is good enough already.  Any thicker and they should not call this minimalist
Weight:  Because NB Minimus contains only what is necessary, it's almost 50% lighter than traditional lightweight shoes
My thoughts. The traditional shoes weighs around 12 oz while the Minimus is expecting to hit as low as 7 oz.  Which is not bad at all.

Here are some teaser photos

Merrell plus Vibram equals Barefoot Collection

Saw this on their blog -- Merrell® is proud to announce a new partnership with Vibram®; exclusively collaborating to introduce a complete Barefoot Collection of shoes in the outdoor category.  Basically, we’re putting together a collection of minimalist, lightweight, versatile and efficient footwear that will be available in February 2011; an entire category of barefoot shoes that lets your feet lead you into your outdoor passion of choice

As I've said, the barefoot revolution is coming.  The big boys in the shoe industry is now seeing the new wave of runners.  I am so excited that collaborations like this are happening and I hope it continues and create the much needed ripple effect in the marketplace.  This will also help stir up the pricing scheme of Feelmax, Terra Plana and the like.  Talk about shelling out $80 (roughly P3,600) for a pair of shoes that has less materials versus the regular ones and no technology used

Here's what we can expect

Found a New Balance RC130X on Sale

Last Sunday, after attending a mass, I went to Megatrade Hall to take a peek.  There was a shoes and bags sale at the time.  I've no intention of buying anything but simply to tempt myself.  And hopefully control the strong urge wherein most of the time, I'd give in

Found myself browsing the shelves one by one.  Looking for a steal.  Unfortunately there was nothing that I fancied.  Or so I thought.  Until I bumped in to the display rack of New Balance.  Like a glimmer of hope on a losing battle, there she was shining so brightly -- RC130X.  Totally, totally unexpected!

For a minute or two, I felt like a child who has found his lost marble.  It was ecstasy.  I immediately picked it up the moment I saw it and held on to like the next person besides me was snatch it away from my hands.  Who would have thought that one of the best racing flats that New Balance ever made was to be found on sale.  I quickly checked out the price.  P2,300.  Now this is a steal, I said to myself.  I asked if there were sizes available, and got a positive response.  This just made my day even better

Originally I was set to visit the new Asics store in Greenbelt 3.  Was looking forward to see if they've got racing flats as well.  But with this find, who cares.

You may now be scratching your head, what's a racing flat?  I picked up the following at Wikipedia

"are lightweight athletic shoes designed for long distance track and field, cross country, and most often, road races. They differ from normal training shoes mainly by the lack of a substantial heel (hence the name). They are also a great deal less durable and typically last half to a quarter of the distance of a normal training shoe (125–250 miles or 200-400 kilometers). The removal of the heel in racing flats has 4 principal effects: weight reduction, better foot to ground power transfer, providing less support and giving less cushioning. These features allow a runner to race more efficiently"

"One benefit of racing flats is evident in their weight. Most weigh less than 9 oz., thus making it easier for a runner to run a long distance race without being weighed down. If one trains in heavier, cushioned shoes, the change to lightweight racing flats give the sensation of the runner's legs being almost weightless. During the course of several miles, that feeling benefits the runner both physically and mentally"

This particular model is very, very light.  Weighing only 124 grams (4.37 oz).  To give you an idea on how light (or heavy) this is, my Nokia E63 tips the scale at 126 grams (4.44 oz)

What happened?  Where is it?  Am I wearing it already?

Here's the rest of the story.  I tried out their size 10 and it fit like a glove.  It was perfect.  Unfortunately I needed a bigger size, at least a half-inch bigger.  Since I am going to use it for my practice runs and races it is best that I keep some space for my toes to move.  So I asked for a size 10.5 or 11.  He shook his head.  I ended up empty handed *sob*

Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) 2010 Race Map

I've been checking the SCMS website for awhile now to get some updates about the race.  Particularly the race route.  The available information provided initially was that the starting points for all distances are different.  The 42k runners will start at Orchard while the half-mary runners will go off at Sentosa and the 10k racers will kick it off at Esplanade Drive.  The finish point for all categories will be at St Andrew's Road

Last May, additional information was posted on what to expect --
Full marathon runners will be in for a treat as they will be able to run down Orchard Road with the Christmas light-up in full operation after the flag-off near Ngee Ann City. Runners will be taken past iconic landmarks such as the colourful Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts building, followed by bustling Chinatown and the grand Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

Half marathon runners will start their run on Sentosa Bridge and can expect to be taken through Southeast Asia’s first and only Universal Studios theme park at Resorts World Sentosa, where they might be greeted by Shrek, Po (from Kung Fu Panda) and other well-known animated characters. This is the first marathon to take place within the newly opened Universal Studios Singapore. As for the 10km category, runners will start off at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay and will run past Singapore’s Financial District before moving over to the new Helix Bridge

In their FAQ, the detailed map will be ready by October.  Luckily, I chanced upon their facebook site and saw the proposed route for all distances

And to make things even more interesting, here's the contents of the goodie bag

Hopefully all distance runners will be able to get one.  It will really be a shame if 10k runners like me won't be able to get my hands on that beautiful chronograph watch

All runners who complete their distances will get the finisher's medal, finisher's certificate, and finisher's t-shirt.  For the shirt, I am assuming that it will not be given to every one because there is that clause "if applicable"
